Ginger—or ginger root—is a rhizome (collection of roots) found around the world. It’s used traditionally in different countries—like ginger wine that’s produced in the United Kingdom, China’s common use of pairing sliced or whole ginger root with savory dishes like fish, and Jamaica’s regional specialty called Jamaican ginger cake.
There are so many delicious recipes and unique uses for ginger, and it comes in a few recognizable forms. Ground ginger is more commonly used in recipes like ginger cookies and cakes. Fresh ginger, which comes in surprisingly fun-shaped pieces, is used for things like candied ginger, ginger syrup and tea. Fresh ginger can be substituted for ground ginger at a ratio of 6 to 1.
A few of the most prominent nutrients in ginger include amino acids, calcium, essential fatty acids, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and C. Ground ginger also contains Vitamin A.
Medicinal Uses of Ginger Through History
For thousands of years, ginger has been used as a spice and popular herbal medicine in ChineseIndian, and Iranian medicine. In India and China, ginger root has been used as a tonic for upwards of 5,000 years.
In traditional Chinese medicine, fresh and dried ginger have widely different medicinal uses. While eating fresh, raw ginger allows you to reap its anti-emetic, expectorant, and immune boosting effects, dried ginger is commonly used for relieving stomachaches, diarrhea, and vomiting.
In Indian medicine, ginger is referred to as mahabheshaji or mahauishadbi, which can be translate to mean the great cure or the great medicine and it has been used for millennia to treat a number of ailments. In the ancient Ayurvedic texts of CharakaSusruth, and Vagbhatt, ginger is recommended as a cure for goutelephantiasis, and indigestion, and it is still a very popular Indian remedy.
Ginger also has a history of medicinal use in traditional Iranian medicine. According to ancient Iranian manuscripts, ginger has applications as a tonic for memoryliver healthdigestion, and diarrhea. It is also recorded as being prescribed as an aphrodisiac, as well as a remedy for paralysis and jaundice; however, science is yet to validate some of this ancient medicinal application.
Ginger is a highly exportable commodity; we have the capacity and are willing to export it anywhere in the world.
